Black backgrounds
Our goal will be getting images with our subject illuminated with natural light, on a totally black background. We will search for pictures with this special lighting, which makes them simple, but at the same time mysterious and impressive.
Again, we underexpose so that the exposure indicated by the camera only slightly illuminates our subject and the background, again in shadow or in low light, remains completely black. In this case we do not need our light source to be in a specific place, but a background that’s darker than our subject.
The importance of backgrounds
When we position ourselves at different angles, we are giving our photographs a totally different atmosphere. Either including part of the landscape, placing our subject with the sky in the background, or zooming in to fill our frame, making any reference to the place where it’s located. By changing our position, we can obtain a different color background or a background with few elements; doing this analysis in relation to our subject, will help us to create a careful aesthetic in our image.
Foregrounds/ Close-ups
How to give depth to a scene, looking for elements that create different layers, adding interest, mystery, which don’t disturb, but also includes originality to our photography. Placing ourselves in a low point of view we can include grass out of focus, or placing our lens between leaves or tree branches, we create a foreground with a great blur that adds color and dimension to the scene.
Animal behavior knowledge
The study of the species that we are going to photograph will allow us to predict their behavior and therefore plan their movements as much as possible. This knowledge, will help us to obtain the photographs we are looking for in much less time. This prediction also allows us to be prepared in advance and avoid losing some pictures.
How to create silhouettes
The first and last light of the day are the best for creating silhouettes with animals whose profiles are textured with fur such as cheetahs, ostriches, giraffes, bears, baboons, etc.
The keys are: placing ourselves with the light source behind our subject and the correct exposure. Then we will be able to obtain our subject silhouetted with a line of golden light. To make that golden silhouette more impressive, we look for a background that is in shadow.
To obtain a minimalist photo, we will have to underexpose several stops in relation with the expoximeter information. There is no exact number to talk about underexposure, because it depends on the light and the conditions of each moment.
Searching the moment
Learn how to identify the moments that are worth the wait, by the animal’s location, the action, calculating how all the variants (composition, background, light, etc.) are in the right place.
Anticipating and organizing our position will be decisive in being able to photograph the expected scene as soon as it happens. In addition, we will have time to make an initial shot, to measure the light and frame it as we want.
Creativity
An image that has been cared for, paying attention to composition light, moment, angle, etc. can be a creative one, which is not random. This creativity will allow us to take exciting, impactful, original, aesthetically pleasant photographs that stand out from the thousands of documentary photographs that we see every day with lack of expression or drama.
Gear
We will learn the moments to use the different lenses, and understand how the focal lengths can help us to improve obtaining a better photograph. By analyzing the scene and the location where we are located, we can quickly decide what focal length is optimal for the image we want to build.
Image selection
In the review of our photographs, we have to be strict with our work, and discard those that don’t show what we wanted. It can be due to an inadequate light, a distracting background, lack of interesting action, erroneous compositions, or technical details that cannot be ignored such as burned areas; as long as it is not what we want to show or express with our work, etc. The more demanding we are with the images that we want to publish, show, or keep, the higher quality portfolio we will get.
